I worked out a way to measure the amount of ash and pumice thrown out during volcanic eruptions. This has been very useful. Perhaps more interesting – we found, a few years ago, that there are more volcanic eruptions around the world during northern hemisphere winter months than during the summer! We think this has something to do with the way that the amount of water on Earth’s surface changes with the seasons.
