      Yes, in time. Volcanoes seem to have their own general patterns of behaviour; so by understanding their pasts, we can get some clues about how they will behave in the future. I work on young or active volcanoes to try and understand how they work now, and what they have done in the past; this information then helps me, and other scientists, to plan for future eruptions and their consequences, and thereby to help to save lives in the future.
