Probably, though I couldn’t afford to.

If I didn’t get paid at all for it, it would be difficult. I love what I do, but eating and paying the rent are also very important! I would probably try and work a lot and save a lot of money for a few years, and then turn back to science.

I guess I would, because I definitely did not choose this job for the money. After uni, I moved to Los Angeles, California, where I ended up working for the music industry in North Hollywood/Burbank. My boss said I could easily move up the ranks and end up as vice president (who made more money than I’ll ever see) within a few years. It was a good paying job with big Christmas bonuses! My coworkers thought I was nuts to leave the job to go do postgraduate work. I think I needed to have that job, so that I knew what other options there were in life. I made a choice to go into science because I loved it. I didn’t just want a job, I wanted a job that would become my life. I think it’s a personal choice.
