      Hi catiebecca,

This is a tough one. At the moment, the Japanese Government hasn’t asked for humanitarian assistance, and the UK’s Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) doesn’t have an appeal. Japan is also one of the best prepared countries in the world in terms of disaster prevention, preparedness and response. (There are regular volcano, earthquake and tsunami drills across Japan every year, for example). The tragedy for Japan was that the tsunami was so large in places that it managed to flow over the top of the flood defences.

I usually do make a point of giving money to DEC appeals related to natural disasters (particularly earthquakes or volcanic eruptions), but at the moment I think that it would be better to continue to give money to other deserving causes in the developing world.
