      From light scattering in the atmosphere. In the late 1800s, Rayleigh worked out that the anount of scattering was proportional to the fourth power of (1/wavelength). So short wavelengths of light (at the blue end of the spectrum) are scattered more by molecules in the atmosphere than long wavelengths. This effect can account for the blue skies overhead.

      A mixture of the gas molecules, I think.
