That’s a good question and my research is a bit of me-search. After a pretty rough childhood, I was interested in why I did not become a criminal who didn’t care about hurting people. I had a lot of the troubles that you hear about in people who end up as criminals, so usually the troubles end up badly! It almost did for me: when I was 13, I wrote a 50 page story about killing everyone in my school (fiction, of course). At 15, I attempted suicide. At 16, I was arrested (trespassing). It did not look good. However, I did turn my life around and I would like to help others to turn their lives around. So, my interest is personal and that’s why I am so passionate about finding out how children become hurtful: to prevent it.
why did you try to attempt suicide? it is a very interesting subject as to try to prevent others from this kind of harm, and i think from you that it’ll benefit as you know how it can effect your life.
Hi catiebecca, it was mainly a call for help. I probably didn’t think my mom was acknowledging my inner pain, so I made it really obvious for her.
Because some people are not really trying to die, it’s very difficult to separate those who are really trying to kill themselves from those who don’t, making prevention difficult. However, I think it’s important to take it seriously when someone says they want to die, especially when they have a history of depression. I’m glad you want to take on such a challenging problem!
aww thats sad, but at least you go it helped and under control and managed to get your mum to see you needed her.
yeah, its a intersting subject that i am (becca) keen in. i would like to help, do you know if there are any places where i could help with it? :/
One of the best places I found was working for a crisis hotline, where people phone in with problems. As soon as I was 18 years-old, I went on the training and I started volunteering. It felt great to make a difference. There were occassions where people phoned when they were thinking of taking their own life, and I was able to do my part to help. It taught me a lot about people and what is most important to them, which I now use in my own research. And hopefully, I do the research to find out what works best and then you fix the people based on my research!! Deal?
