Villarrica, Chile: it was the first volcano I remember visiting as a child (when I was 7); it’s active (been bubbling away for the past 20 years); and it’s a near-perfect ice and snow-covered cone that rises 2000 metres above the surrounding countryside. It’s easy to get to, quite easy to climb, and there are fabulous views from the top. In terms of science it’s great, because it is one of a number of volcanoes in the region (there are volcanoes every 30 – 50 km or so down this part of Chile) which seem to have had a larger-than-usual eruption soon after the end of the last ice age (about 15,000 years ago). I am trying to work out if this is actually true; and if so, why?

Apart from Villarrica, I have quite a soft spot for any near-perfect volcanic cone.. so other favourites would include ones I have visited (Mayon, Philippines; Osorno, Chile) and others I’d like to visit (Shishaldin, Kamchatka, Russia)
