No – volcanoes are only dangerous when they are in an unpredictable state of eruption; most of the time they are just like any other mountain. Most of the hazards with working on volcanoes are due to steep slopes, and so on, like any mountain; or the travel to get there. The worst incidents I have had on volcanoes has been being held up by armed robbers, twice..
Waiting for tourists, both times! I just happened to be in the wrong place, in a car, too early in the morning, so I guess I looked like an obvious target. In Nicaragua, it was a bit alarming as I didn’t even have any cash on me – and they couldn’t believe it; all they got was a cheap camera, a broken watch and a penknife..

First time, it was a guy with a pistol; second time, it was two with a machete and a rifle!
