When I was 7, I lived in Chile for a year. In the summer we drove south from Santiago, and all I remember was seeing one volcanic cone after another. Then we got to Villarrica, which had erupted the year before. The road was still blocked with the debris from the eruption.. I was hooked – and this passion stayed with me. After school I went to uni to study geology, and three years later started research on volcanoes. I went back to Villarrica to work on it about thirty years after I had first been. Amazing! So yes – you can follow your childhood dreams into a career in science.
One of my favourite experiences as a child was going to the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico and learning about astronomy. They have the largest radio telescope and it’s incredible. I suppose it was my first exposure to science where I realized that people could study science as a career! I didn’t end up studying astronomy, but I did find that I liked the practical aspects of science from my experience.
