It sounded fun and was an opportunity to try and influence and encourage students to carry on with science in their education and careers. When I heard about it I thought it was a great idea and should be publicised as much as possible.
It sounded like a fun way to fully engage in dialogue with the next generation of scientists, in a way that is new and exciting. For me, it has far exceeded my expectations – the live chat sessions are enormous fun, but mainly a battle to type as quickly as possible while watching the questions disappearing off the screen; and the q and a part of it is obviously getting a lot of people involved – and not only in asking questions, but following up on them too!
I thought, this is cool! In general, I like to talk to people about my science and I like to hear from them. To be honest, my salary comes from your taxes (or, probably, your parents’ taxes), so I bloody well owe you an explanation about what I’ve been up to at work!
Also, because I’ve been working in my specific field for a while, I thought that your questions might force me to think out of the box a bit, to look at the bigger picture and to learn something new. And I have to say, it totally worked!
I was sent an email about it and I don’t think I thought too hard before I volunteered to be considered for it! 🙂 But I thought it sounded like a good way to get students involved in science and for them to have a chance to connect with scientists. I wanted to be a part of that.
