      Great question!

How about this: active volcanoes can be shaken up by very large earthquakes. There is already some suggestion that a number of volcanoes in and around Japan had small to moderate eruptions shortly after the seismic waves from last Friday’s earthquake passed by. This may include an eruption at Karangetang, Api Siau, Indonesia (4400 km away!); and eruptions at Sakurajima and Shinmoedake, Kirishima, Japan.

This all needs to be checked, but if it is true, it will confirm a pattern that has also been seen elsewhere, after very large earthquakes (magnitude 8 and larger).
