• Question: What do you think about the controversial spending review revealed by george osborne? Do you think that it is fair that all other sections of the country should receive budget cuts, while scientific research is left untouched?

Sci research has not been left untouched. It just sounds like it – but there will be real cuts, after accounting for inflation. Universities have also been very severely cut, before any new funding system is in place. There’s too much radical change, too quickly. Too many new policies launched, without enough careful thought..

Budget questions are always difficult. But cutting down spending on scientific research would have extremely negative effects. Economically, research and innovation is one key area in which the UK can compete with other nations, so cutting down on that would just be stupid.

In psychology, we have seen huge cuts to our research budget. I’m not sure about other disciplines.
