I wouldn’t change my name! I don’t think that my name means anything (well, Pyle may mean pole or post), but obviously it links back to previous family generations.. A few years ago, a relative discovered that she could trace one part of the family tree back, indirectly, to Aethelred the Unready, who ruled England from 978 to 1016 AD. It’s not a big deal – Aethelred had thirteen children and it’s likely that a significant fraction of the population of England could do the same! [That’s an interesting calculation to do!]

For academic scientists, your name is a sort of trademark – which you would usually wish to use on all of your published papers/published materials, so changing your name wouldn’t really be in your interests.

My first and middle names mean “clear moon”. I used to want to change them to something more common in the US. I think I wanted Jeannette for some reason….

My name is greek and means “dark” (for instance, the dark pigment in the skin is called melanin!) I think it’s quite appropriate, since I have dark hair and dark eyes. Also, my sister picked it for me, so I would never want to change it, because it is like a gift she gave me to welcome me to this world, and that I can keep for my entire life!

I’ve no idea what my name means, sorry. I definitely wouldn’t change it though – it’s my name!
