I think when I look back at anything, to me the people I’ve met stands out. I think that I’ve made really good connections with people. Travelling all over the world is also a BIG bonus to being a scientist. Since my family was poor, I never would have been able to come to Europe. However, being a scientist allowed me the possibility to work in Sweden and now the UK!

      Great question. Many highlights:

I have met, worked with and taught some amazing people, and this is a continued source of inspiration and enjoyment.

My work has taken me to some of the most fabulous places on Earth (from the Indonesian jungle, to the desolation of Mt Pinatubo; from volcanoes at sea level in Greece, to others at over 5 km elevation in the Atacama desert; and from some of the hottest places in Earth (Afar, Ethiopia), to the glaciers of the southern hemisphere. And I have had the pleasure of seeing science projects go from a random idea into a published paper, which other scientists have then started to use.

Discovering new things. Having an exciting new idea and discussing it with co-workers. Watching a fish embryo develop all the way from a single cell to a complete adult fish. Going to conferences all over the world. Baking cookies with a Nobel laureate …

I’ve not really had much of a career in terms of timeso far but probably the highlight was getting my degree – hopefully lots more to come!
