Question: Is there anyway to destroy the nuclear energy that is being held completely so that if any natural disasters, such as the one in Japan, ever happens again we would be able to stop it from harming the thousands of people that it is?

Can I weigh in on this one? We could use a different type of nuclear energy – driven by a particle accelerator, so that the nuclear reactions only happen when the accelerator is on. If the power goes out or something bad happens, the accelerator switches off and the reactions stop. No chance of a meltdown. I work on designing the accelerators for this kind of thing at the moment, it’s a tough problem, but I hope that new technologies like this will be able to come up with a better solution than just storing highly radioactive waste!
