Sorry I’m not qualified or knowledgeable enough to answer that one, I work for a company who carry out nuclear decommissioning and reprocessing and have no knowledge of nuclear weapons.
It would depend on the scale of the conflict and the mega-tonnage of the bombs involved. If it escalated rapidly out of control then it would certainly wipe out humanity.
While there are some underground vaults around the world, survivors may find that it would not be worth returning to a world that would be devoid of anything green and unlike anything they could remember. And in any case the half life of most radioactive agents is about a thousand years. A bit long to wait.
