It depends when I think that I ‘became’ a scientist. The simplest answer is about 25 years – this is when I finished my first degree (in geology), and began my research. But if science is actually the process of making observations, and developing and testing ideas based on those observations, then I have been a scientist for much longer. I was already fascinated by nature when I was at primary school; and I had my own collection of rocks and fossils by the time I was seven. I have even read a book where the authors suggest that everyone starts life as a scientist – babies develop by picking up new skills and testing them repeatedly. Then, of course, once they can talk, they soon start to ask ‘why?’.

About seven years – although it’s hard to decide at what point one stops being a student and starts being a scientist.

hmmm….professionally, about 10 years. I feel that I’ve been a scientist for much longer than that, since I was performing experiments for the last 15 years.

Depends on when you think a person first becomes a scientist. I’ve worked as a scientist for nearly 16 years. Before that I studied science at uni for 4 years and of course sciences at school……

Not really sure when being a scientist starts! I graduated in Chemistry in 2005 so maybe could start from then?!

I think if you’re interested in science then you can probably call yourself a scientist – you don’t have to have an official job title!
