Since I was a kid, science has made a lot of things quite a bit easier. The biggest impact on daily life, I think, has come about through faster computers, mobile phones and the internet have had a huge impact both on how we live and how we work. I find it really hard to imagine how people went about their jobs and their other activities in a pre-internet world!
Hello elhermano – in fact this question only went to Melanie!
I think that I would agree with Melanie: the biggest thing that has affected my life and work has been the growth of the internet, and global communications. The worldwideweb was invented at the accelerator lab, CERN, in order to help the scientists keep track of the experiments… and look where we are now. The internet must be one of the most incredible spin-offs from a science project yet!
I am sitting at my desk now, following up reports of volcanic activity in Russia and Japan using satellite data that were collected yesterday.. I couldn’t have done anything like this 10 years ago! Later today, I’ll catch up with my colleagues who are working on a project in Nicaragua, and then have a chat with another colleague in New Zealand..
I agree. Sorry to butt in. I remember the first time I was on the internet and my brain was filled with all the wonderful things that I thought it could do. Now, a lot of those possibilities have become reality. I can use Skype to talk to family but also collaborate much more easily with people in Lithuania, Australia (as long as I get the time difference sorted and I’m not sleeping while they’re awake as work!), and Sweden. I know many born now won’t know pre-internet days, and I think that’s incredible!
