Great question. Creams like savlon contain two types chemicals (amongst many others), one which is an antiseptic to kill and germs (bacteria) and one which promotes clotting and healing.

In the body, when the injury occurs the damaged cells release chemicals which are like an SOS call – to call for white cells to kill bacteria, platelets to start clotting and for new cells to start to be made (scar, skin, muscle etc). Savlon contains man made versions of these “SOS call” chemicals which promote clotting and healing.
