Cooperative behaviour must have given animals an edge in the survival game! Of course, one can think of uses for this, such as the ability to hunt animals in groups and to offer protection in groups.

Good question – and one where I am not sure that there is an answer yet. The reward for cooperative behaviour is presumably a benefit at community or society level, in any group of organisms (from ants to humans). So presumably cooperative behaviour evolved once social groups began to out-perform groups of individuals?
