Krakatoa – or Krakatau – erupted in August 1883, and was the first ‘global’ volcanic eruption, to be reported around the world using the new network of underwater cables. It was a very large eruption (12 cubic km of rock, or so?) and did a lot of damage locally wirh a big tsunami. The climate effect was small, but the effect on science was large – as the path of the ash cloud round the world led to the discovery of the windspeeds in the stratosphere.
