Good question – I started off thinking out podcasts from volcanoes, and no-one has made any better suggestions yet, but there is time! The point of these would be:
– I can show how we do science in the field;
– I can explain how volcanoes work using the real thing, not just a textbook;
– I can explain the science of volcanoes and how it links to science at school;
and finally, podcasts will be semi-permanent records, freely available on the internet for several generations of students at schools, so it might have a more lasting effect.
Yes! I now think that the money is better spent on an activity. Einstein said that experience is the only source of knowledge and I’d like to give students an experience of psychology as a science. I think many people have the basics for understanding psychology: we are humans and we know about our own thoughts. I think I can build on that self-knowledge to help students understand how psychologists come to know about human behaviour!
