Yes – I have worked on several volcanoes that have been erupting lava. On Mt Etna (Sicily, Italy), I have collected hot lava samples from a moving flow, and have collected freshly falling ash. On Montserrat (Caribbean), I was there for six weeks collecting freshly erupted ash samples. Two years, I worked at Chaiten, Chile, which was still squeezing out lava into a dome. Usually, I choose to work on volcanoes which are not actually erupting, as it is safer and you usually get closer to the vent to collect samples.
