Hi emchavze – as a scientist, I don’t think that everything has a purpose; in fact, a strict scientific view would probably be that nothing has a purpose! Personally, I find life more rewarding by believing that I have a purpose, and this is what drives me on, but I don’t see ‘purpose’ in objects..

What would we be without stars, though? The Big Bang at the start of the universe mainly created hydrogen and helium. We need star-formation and supernovae (and all the nuclear reactions that go on in them), to create the rest of the cosmic soup, and all of the other elements that go to make up us, Earth and the periodic table. So – no stars, no life, no humans, no purpose?
