I have! There was a recent study I did which I had planned for about 5 years and I couldn’t believe no one did the study while I was still just thinking about it.

It was a study to find whether there was evidence that people who lack empathy had other problems in their brains than in just the emotional areas of the brain. It turned out that they did. My research suggests that people who lack empathy seem to have trouble knowing when people are afraid and knowing this takes more than just the emotion centres of the brain – you also need the parts that control your movement. This is because you need to imagine your own body moving in an afraid way: for example, backing away while shielding your body with your hands. It’s a very specific question but I thought it was strange that no one had researched other areas than just emotion. Because of my background in biological psychology, I was the first to research this.

Yes – there have been a few times when a result has popped up that just seems so obvious (it’s always afterwards that it seems obvious!) that you think someone else must already know this.. So then you go away and read all the papers on the subject again, and more, and all the time you’re feeling a bit more excited (that you’re the first one to spot this) and a bit more nervous that the next paper will be the one that has seen it before. It’s one of the great feelings in science, to realise that you are somewhere where no one else has been!

People do, actually. It’s a bit like a race 🙂
